The Phoenix area offers plenty of opportunities to get off-road and immerse yourself in the magnificent Arizona desert environment. We suggest beginning your adventures in the Apache Trail wilderness and Superstition Mountains. Enjoy a half-day or full day jeep tour adventure with Apache Trail Tours located 30 minutes east of Phoenix (see Tip). View desert lakes, deep canyons and sheer cliffs as your guide relates the history and legends of this mysterious region. Take time to stop at the Lost Dutchman State Park and tour the hiking and nature trails. The Park and visitor center is located 5 miles north of Apache Junction on State Rt. 88.

To fully savor the expanse of desert and sky try a dawn or sunset hot air balloon flight. Adventures Out West Balloons and Jeeps presents the visitor with a variety of tours.

Join the Arizona beach party as you go tubing on the Lower Salt River and view the Tonto National Forest in cool comfort (see map). Contact Salt River Tubing if your stay in Phoenix is between May and October.

The spirit of the Old West is alive and well in Phoenix especially when you are in the saddle. A tour along the trails of South Mountain Park will take you back in time as you view the rugged mountains and smell the sage. Get in touch with Ponderosa Stables at 10215 S.Central Ave. near the entrance to South Mountain Park. For more family fun MacDonalds Ranch in nearby Scottsdale offers horseback tours across the vast Sonoran Desert along with hayrides, and old-fashioned cowboy cookouts.

For mountain biking, archaeological tours, hiking, fishing and several other adventure options we suggest Southwest Adventures out of nearby Mesa.

Tip: Apache Trail Tours is located at Goldfield Ghost Town (worth a visit) 3 miles north of Apache Junction on State Rt. 88. Hiking tours are also available in the Superstition Mountains through Apache Trail Tours- for more info call 480-982-7661.

Tip: Along with your desire for desert adventure bring along plenty of common sense. Take along water, sunscreen, hats, sturdy footwear, non-perishable snacks and sun glasses.

Tip: Apache Trail Tours is located at Goldfield Ghost Town (also a fun stop) 3 miles north of Apache Junction on State Rt. 88. Hiking tours are available in the Superstition Mountains through Apache Trail Tours- for more info call 480-982-7661 or E-mail at Jeeptour@aol.com.

Tip: If time permits consider the 120 mile Apache Trail Circle Drive. This spectacular route unrolls mile by mile the beauty and history of Arizona. But be aware that this drive is not for the faint of heart- there are steep grades and hair-pin turns in some areas.
